Ethio mentality???

Fri Sep 26 17:13:13 -0700 2008
For many years films have been used as information tools. Films have been used as propaganda for politicians and corporate identities and many media outlets beyond their entertainment values. Although it would be hard to blatantly claim that movies of a nation represent the mentality of that nation, we can't run from the fact that to some extent they do reflect a nation's mentality intentionally or non-intentionally. Some films were made either by inspiration of a moment or a situation that happened in the past or a fear of something that might happen in the future. All films of a nation do not represent that nation. But films are art and artworks are products of a culture. Film is also a kind of communication between the makers and the broad audience. Audiences would not have the power to make the films but they have every power to choose what they want to see. It is a little complicated topic so I wont get in to it too much but lets think bout the movies we see from Hollywood, Europe, Bollywood and from our own Ethiopia. Back in the day the germen nazis used 2 use films as a propaganda. Hollywood uses that 2. Who's seen "birth of a nation", Independence day, Born on the fourth of july, and many more. Even the new Iron Man(talking bout gun control) The point I'm trying 2 make is, How many EThio films have we seen that r so depressing? Is that who we r as a nation? (Correct me if I'm wrong please) the most successful ET films r the ones that r so depressing. It could b bout love, loss, class(high/low) & prob jus bout those…… Does that mean that's all we care bout? How poor we r, how life is so hard on us, how we cant love who we want cos of our social status, how aids is killing us, how proud Ethiopians we r(unfortunately pride itself doesn't do it for us although it is part of who we r) Most of the films we do reflect these themes. If a filmmaker was bout 2 b challenging then they would make films like ethnic differences, history, love, political thriller, sci fi, fantasy…. Unfortunately I see a huge problem in this. Our ppl r not ready for anything challenging as it is right now in the country. Our ppl sadly like 2 b in their own comfort zone rather than growing up n changing(correct me if I'm wrong please). Why cant we be so creative & entertaining? Lets always aim Higher!

Curious

Fri Sep 26 17:13:07 -0700 2008
Just something that came 2 my attention lately. Actually I been thinking bout it 4 a while. How often do we c in ppl's profile sayin "I'm this n I'm that, I like this n I like that"??? It usually finishes with "IF U WANNA KNO MORE PLEASE ASK" well, almost a lot. Including mine of course. This brings me 2 my question. Who do we really want 2 ask us this question??? Who do we wanna tell bout who we really r? Is it the pretty girl???? Or is it the handsom guy??? Please don't get me wrong. I'm not tryin 2 generalise. Not every1 does that of course. I jus thought it would b an interesting topic 2 discuss. 2 jus put some of the question 2gethe * Who do we really want 2 b asked by? * Would we really give out personal information 2 ppl we meet on the net? * How often do we question the ppl that even access our page/profile rather than the Ppl who ask us questions? Lets try 2 b honest. Peace 2 all!

BEING!

Fri Sep 26 17:09:43 -0700 2008
Sup people! I was jus doin ma assignment b4 n I thought I shud share ma thought with u all. I'm writing a 2000 word essay with a topic called "BEING" So wat is BEING? I can understand every1 would have a different answer. So Wat really stops us from BEING who we are? Most of us(humans) live a life of a person who we think we are rather than who we really are. In ma opinion, consequences, fear of ridicule, rejection, violation of our image, fear of failure and many more stops us from BEING who we are. I can 100% say that these things affect me specially being in today's' society where a person is judged by pretty much everything I can think of. But I've come across people who disagree with me saying they are who they think they are. So wachu pps think? Are you who you really think you are? Is it possible to achieve the state of BEING in today's society??? Peace 2 all!

Greenhouse gas

Fri Sep 26 17:09:28 -0700 2008
In a recent research on the world's usage of resources, it was discovered that if the humans will continue the current trends of consumption of supplies and energy, the Earth will be exhausted by 2050. In other words humanity can meet apocalypse in 44 years and the world economy will collapse, if current emissions rates would continue. Now some of you might not plan to live that long, but for the rest of us that ain't a good number.  Most of the experts agree though that if certain actions will be taken now we can reverse the damage. Next fifteen years will be critical. If we take the difficult steps within the next decade, Earth and humans will survive. If we procrastinate another fifteen years, it might become too late. But in order for this to work countries like the US and Australia have to be part of it.

The Pharmacist

Fri Sep 26 17:09:18 -0700 2008

This is jus a little joke every1. If u havent heard it b4

A young man goes into a pharmacy and asks the pharmacist: "Hello, could you give me condom. My girlfriend has invited me for dinner and I think she is expecting something from me!"The pharmacist gives him the condom; and as the young man is going out, he returns and tells him: "Give me another condom because my girlfriend's sister is very cute too. She always crosses her legs in a provocative manner when she sees me and I think she expects something from me too." The pharmacist gives him a second condom; and as the boy is leaving he turns back and says:" After all, give me one more condom because my girlfriend's mom is still pretty cute and when she sees me she always makes allusions... and since she invited me for dinner, I think she is expecting something from me!!During dinner, the young man is sitting with his girlfriend on his left, the sister on his right and the mom facing him. When the dad gets there, the boy lowers his head and starts praying: "Dear Lord, bless this dinner... thank you for all you give us... !!!"A minute later the boy is still praying: "Thank you Lord for your kindness..." Ten minutes go on and the boy is still praying, keeping his head down. The others look at each other surprised and his girlfriend even more than the others. She gets close to the boy and tells him in his ear: "I didn't know you were so religious!!!"The boy replies:" I didn't know your dad was a pharmacist!!!"

Love???

Fri Sep 26 17:08:40 -0700 2008
Please dont take it personal but try 2 finish it.

When we say we love this country, what do we mean we actually love? Is it the people, the land, the name, the history, the culture, or the religion? And how many of us know our responsibility toward the country we say we love. Or is it just for show?

I am from Ethiopia. For the world, Ethiopia is just another country (a poor one 2). But for me, the name itself means something. As a kid growing up in ET, I always assumed that the world was so big but ET was the greatest of all. I’m sorry to say this but I don’t think I feel the same way anymore. How I feel right now is that ET could have been one if it wasn’t for her own people. I’m not talking about the leaders we had but us, people like you and me. The people who always opted to complain & whinge before even something happens instead of try to make something happen.

I’m going to ask a simple question. How many of us knew what we wanted to be after we finish grade 12? But how many of us would complain about a political situation in our homeland before we even know how it is going to affect us? Or is it just a habbit? Don’t get me wrong here as im not talking about the current situation. I’m talking about whats been happening for hundreds of years and possibly to continue for god knows how long. The only time Hbaesha people in the Diaspora get together is when there is a political situation. But why? What’s up with the youth?

Now lets go back to the LOVE. What do we do to the people that we love? How about to the country that we love? How many people are on Habeshahookup talking about how much they love ET or ERI. Is it just that its so easy for us to talk hiding behind our computer desk in our luxury homes about 5 minutes away from McDonalds store? By the way this would apply to any country excluding the western countries. Sometimes our patriotism makes us forget that this problem is actually a global issue not only ours.

"Apart from the Kingdom of the Lord there is not on this earth any nation that is superior to any other." Haile Selassie I –Address to the League of Nations, 1936

In my opinion, what makes a great nation is having a strong identity with respect for others, strong culture, religion, stability and peace, at least be able to have three meals per day. And a citizen of the nation knowing what makes the country a country is its population not its leaders. A leader comes from that nation. A country doesn’t need to have half of its population to be doctors or professors to be a good country. For example if you see Botswana, it has been stable for a long time.  They are the worlds largest producers of diamond. That came after stability.

At the moment I’m a citizen of the country I live in. Yes I love ET and I miss it very much. I always wondered what I loved or missed about that country. It was never the history or the look. Every country has its own look and history. And everyone is proud of being who they are. In my case, it was the feel of home. Of course I didn’t know that before I came here. Last time I went back there, I went back to the place I was born and I was able to recognise the things I didn’t when I was there. It looked so green but dark. It looked like there is no life there. But everyday I spent there, I had the best time. The smell of fresh air, fresh cooked food, love of the people, sense of community makes you forget that. But I don’t want to be showing my patriotic view of ET as I feel like I have done nothing as any citizen should.

Where I live now. I respect the law, I pay my taxes because the moment I arrived here that’s what I saw and taught. I don’t really care about the leaders because I get what I want. Money. Politically I’m not a big fun of a national politics but international.

I think I’ve bored enough people for now but ill come back with more next time.

Peace to all!
